Marriage Licenses
If both applicants are residents of Ohio, they must apply in the county in which they are residents of and can get married anywhere in the state of Ohio. If both applicants are out-of-state residents and are getting married in Ohio, they apply in the county they are getting married in. Marriage licenses for Jefferson County are obtained at Jefferson County Probate Court.
Copies of a marriage license cost $3.00 and may be obtained by calling the Court at 740-283-8593.
The Probate Court issues marriage licenses between 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM during regular business days.
Application
A marriage license is good for sixty days from the date of issuance. If the marriage does not take place within sixty days, a new license application is required. The fee is not refundable or transferable.
The cost to obtain a marriage license is $60.00 payable in cash.
Applicants for a marriage license must both appear in person at the Probate Court Clerk’s office and bring with them:
- Proof of photo identification such as a passport, a driver’s license, or an identification card.
- If applicable, each applicant must also bring certified copies (raised Court seal) of the most recent divorce/dissolution decrees, from the state/jurisdiction in which the applicant was divorced. A certified copy has the original seal/signature on it from the court that issued the decree. Divorce/dissolution decrees that are not certified originals from the court in which the decree was issued will not be accepted.
- If applicable, a copy of the death certificate of a deceased spouse.
